2022 Stay At Home Round Robin Border 1 - Curves

The prompt for the first border of the 2022 SAHRR is from the lovely Anja of Anja Quilts. Anja lead us off to a great start with the suggestion of "Curves", and her version is a beautiful block using convex and concave pieces.

My original block

In searching for an idea, I found inspiration in a layout diagram for the Huckleberry Quilt in the book Modern Rainbow by Rebecca Bryan. I used a small plate as my curve and fashioned 2-1/2 inch blocks of red print curves surrounded by white. They are sashed with a coordinating green/red print. Even though the curves are very gentle and not very pronounced, I like the "spinning" effect they give to the block.

The original block was a 15-1/2 inches square and now measures 19 inches square.

This prompt drew me to rifle through some of my quilt books for ideas - a very pleasant pastime - and creating the pieces without a pattern was a nice challenge. Sewing the curves brought back memories of "easing" in sleeves on the clothes that I sewed when I was younger. Thanks to Anja for a fun first round!

I am joining the linkup right here on Anja's blog, where you may find several beautiful versions of curves.

  3. Your curve design idea is perfect, Linda! It does give a spinning effect to your block. Great idea to look through your quilt books for ideas - even parts of other designs could be useful! I'll have to remember that!

  4. I love your center block…..I am not a fan of curves in quilts for some reason. But I do love the green you used in the first border. I will continue to follow your piece with interest. I love log cabin and the red fabric in your center block is lovely. Carol in Texas

    1. Hi Carol, I'm not a fan of curves either! I love that block too, and I wish I had more of that fabric. :)

  8. Those curves are perfect and the illustration for curvy diamonds would fit the bill for combining last weeks and this weeks. I will get to it, but I am chasing a few deadlines.

  9. I have Rebecca’s Modern Rainbows book and even got her to sign it at QuiltCon 2016. There are so many quilts in that book that I want to make! I really like the subtle curves in your border. I don’t think I would have ever come up with that interpretation of the border prompt. That’s why I enjoy seeing what everyone is doing in the SAHRR!

    1. I feel the same about her book - so many I want to make! Very cool you got her autograph on your book. I know wasn't that a bizarre way for me to find a way to do those curves - lol!
