I Like Thursdays 2-9-23

Dolly in one of my favorite movies - 9 to 5!

When I was a "working girl" (and most of us worked 8 to 5, not 9 to 5!), I liked Thursdays because that meant that Friday was almost here. Now Thursdays have no special significance, other than it is the day for me to post my "Likes". Thanks to lovely LeeAnna at Not Afraid Of Color for hosting this thankfulness event every Thursday!

Icy freeway in Dallas

Speaking of working, I am so grateful that we are both retired and do not have to go to work in adverse weather conditions such as those so many experienced last week. I live in far North Texas, where we had icy roads with about 1/2 inch of frozen rain topped with 1/2 inch of sleet, but Central Texas had their worst ice event in 15 years with almost 3/4 inch of ice resulting in loss of power for hundreds of thousands plus major tree damage. This week we are receiving normal winter rain - I am thankful!

I updated my I Like Thursdays post last week, but for anyone who missed the good news - our DIL had her lumpectomy last Thursday, and it was quick and successful. She is still waiting for the results, but she is healing and has her energy back.

Our suggested prompt this week is to share what we like about Valentine's Day. That won't take long for me to answer - it is pretty much just another day to me. I have pleasant memories of younger days. Daddy used to bring home those little red boxes of Pangburn's chocolates for Mom and me. When I had my own family, Hubby would bring me a dozen red roses and a card, and I would prepare a special dinner and decorated sugar cookie hearts.

We don't really celebrate Valentine's Day now, but I'm hoping to receive a dozen eggs this year instead of a dozen roses - LOL! How about you - is Valentine's Day a special day for you?

  1. LOL - eggs instead of roses - I have not found a problem finding eggs in Arkansas I wonder why that is, price has risen but I still get them, we don't eat them that much and mainly use for cooking I think. Love Dolly! and 9-5 but yes I remember being at the office 8-5

  2. I loved the movie "9 to 5," too! Dolly Parton is a really good actress - wish she had done more of them. It's definitely good to not have to go out on the roads in storms like you guys had! Funny merme about the eggs! So glad to hear your DIL is doing well. Do they know yet if she needs additional treatment?

  3. We haven't done much for Valentine's Day the last number of years either. Being loving every day is more important.

  4. Oh, Linda! Thanks so much for the laugh. A few years ago I asked my hubby to keep Valentine's Day low key going forward. Greeting cards are so expensive these days and I'd rather us just spend time doing something simple together. I enjoy a drive into the mountains or a walk in the park. Hope you get those eggs your wishing for :)

  5. when I got to the egg photo I started laughing out loud! So true. I used to get chocolate hearts from my adopted dad too. Ice is treacherous. Glad we are not out in it too. DH took a walk this morning with the dog and said last night's snow was already a layer of ice and it's just 28F. We do have intense sun tho

  6. 9 to 5 is one of my favorite movies too. I remember going to work after it came out and teasing my boss about having to work 8-5. I had forgotten about the Pangburns chocolates. My mom used to get those, but I have a feeling she bought them for herself. My dad was never really aware of holidays or special occasions. Maybe that's why Valentine's Day isn't a big deal for me.

  8. LOL. A dozen eggs would say I love you! That looks like treacherous driving (and I live in New England!).

  9. Great post! We missed ice on ground but the Pine trees had ice! I buy a case at a time. HEB Organic. Used to be $45.00. Now it is close to $80.00. $6.17 a dozen. I eat 5 each morning. It provides me all the nutrients I cannot get from my limited diet. When all this started I just knew that my eggs would not affect me- What a joke. Have a wonderful weekend. I need to post on Thursdays too! Maybe next week. Hugs and enjoy the new cold front tonight. 80 today. Tomorrow morning will be 31 degrees.

  10. Yes! Your weather lately has been harsh! I’ve been grateful not to be outside on “playground duty”!
    Prayers for your precious DIL!
Valentines' Day? I hoping for a gift certificate to the fabric shop in lieu of flowers! :) How times have changed! :)

  11. Hahaha - this is a great post Linda. We aren't huge on Valentines Day lately. We are babysitting the girls this weekend so we will bring them a treat plus I sent a little care package to Julia but that is about it. The whole egg crisis is silly! Julia says eggs in Central CA are super expensive (over $6 per dozen) because they lost so many hens but here they are reasonably available and about $3.50/doz. I guess the bird flu thing wasn't as big an issue here??

  12. I wish I could give you some eggs! My little hens are just laying away this season, more than we could possible eat!

  14. Linda - joining you from I Like Thursday!!! I have seen many of those egg-themed jokes - funny and sadly true. I was very blessed this week to receive a dozen farm fresh eggs from my dear neighbor! Now that's love!

  15. Ice storms are no joke and it's worse in Texas as the roads aren't built for that kind of weather (some of the highest overpasses in the world have to be Dallas and Houston). I don't remember my family doing much for Valentine's Day, it was mainly something we did at school.
