Picnic Party - Day 4 - My Day!

How perfect is a Picnic Party Challenge in the middle of summer! This event is hosted by Carol of Just Let Me Quilt, and you may find a list of participants at the bottom of this post. A big thank you to Carol for hosting these fun events!

Front and back of my version of the Nona Quilt - "Wonder"!
Carol's challenge was to make something to use for a picnic, such as a quilt, a basket or tote, etc., or to make a square quilt appropriate for a picnic. When Jocelyn of Canadian Needle Nana linked a pattern for the Nona Quilt by Jessica Dayon I immediately thought "picnic quilt". The pattern makes a 50-1/2" x 60-1/2", so I reduced it by one row to make a square "picnic-size".

I pulled some favorite scraps for the nine-patches. The binding and the block in the above photos are made with one of my all-time favorite fabrics by Carrie Bloomston - Newspaper Butterflies in yellow from her 2018 Wonder collection. I purchased it from Bernie when she had her Etsy shop. It is now hard to find - I found a remnant on Etsy that is ridiculously priced.

Fanciful Flyers from Urban Elementz was the perfect panto for quilting!

The back was pieced from two fabrics from Happy Happy by Kate Spain.
These have been in my stash for awhile just waiting for the perfect quilt.

I'm naming this quilt "Wonder" in honor of that fabric I love!
This was a simple, fun make with nine-patches, sashing, and cornerstones. It is destined to be donated to my daughter's minister at her church; she likes to take quilts with her on hospital visits.

Thursday Happenings

Today I am joining our host LeeAnna at Not Afraid Of Color and other bloggers for I Like Thursdays with posts about things that we like. My first like is this darling placemat I received from Rose at Something Rose Made. It makes me happy just to see it on my table, and even my husband keeps commenting on how pretty it is. I love Rose's choices of fabric, and the beautiful hand stitching is exquisite. The binding matches my coffee mug, and the US map on the back is perfect with both Oklahoma and Texas prominently featured on the fabric!

We recently sold our kitchen bar height table and chairs (they were rarely used) on Marketplace and replaced them with an old buffet we have had for years. My husband repainted it, hefted a recycled granite top on top, and gave it new hardware to convert it into a coffee and tea station for us! And I don't just like it, I love it!

Oklahoma Indian Taco
LeeAnna's suggested prompt for the week:
What is your favorite "fair food" What food do you only eat at the fair, or look forward to?
If you don't go to county or state fairs, what about the Renaissance Festival or regional festivals?
For years my favorite fair food was corn dogs, but when we lived in Oklahoma we discovered a new-to-us treat - the Oklahoma Indian Taco, also called the Navajo Taco. It has a base of delicious Indian fry bread layered with taco meat, beans, and the usual taco toppings. It is delicious, but I would be happy with the fry bread alone!

Let me know how your summer is going and what kind of fair food you like in the comments. Be sure to check out other positive posts hereand enjoy your upcoming weekend!

A Quilt For Danny - Pieces Of The Santa Fe Trail Quilt Finish

Pieces of the Santa Fe Trail quilt

Jenni's new father-in-law Danny is on the right
In March our daughter and her now-husband John took a trip to Abilene to meet his Dad. John ended up surprising Jenni with a JP wedding (read about it here), and her new father-in-law, Danny, was their witness. On that trip, Jenni had a quilt with her that I had made for her to donate to John's former church which they attended on Sunday, and when Danny saw the quilt he said "I'd sure like to have a quilt too!" Jenni and Danny instantly bonded, and she asked me if I would mind starting a lap quilt for him. Of course I would love to! I chose fabrics and a pattern and began to cut a few pieces. But for some reason the fabrics and the pattern did not feel right, so it all got shuffled aside as I worked on other projects.

The recent When Pigs Fly Challenge (see all the projects right here) gave me an opportunity to look at UFOs and I found this flimsy and decided it would work perfectly for Danny! This flimsy was finished in January 2022 for Melva's Pieces of the Santa Fe Trail SAL I was first attracted to her SAL after reading Wendy's post in May 2021 and ultimately joined the SAL in September. You can read about the flimsy finish here

The flimsy was not large enough for a lap-sized quilt, so I added a
couple of borders using the same fabrics I used in some of the blocks.

The backing was pieced from some of my vintage stash plus a panel from the "Elizabeth's Dowry" line by Marcus Fabrics (originally intended for a quilt I never made) that coordinates with the front fabrics.

I did a meander with Longmire and bound it with the same green check as the border.
I hope to post a photo of Danny and his quilt after John and Jenni visit him again.

Jack carefully inspected every seam
